Code Change Summary: A new code section was added to require surge protection for emergency system switchboards and panelboards.
In the 2014 NEC®, a listed surge protective device (SPD) is now required for all emergency system switchboards and panelboards. The SPD must be “in or on” the emergency system switchboard or panelboard.
The SPD is required in order to ensure critical electrical equipment is not compromised by momentary surges from lightning, utility capacitor switching, transient voltages and the like.
Article 700 is all about the emergency system. Emergency systems are those systems such as emergency lighting, exit signs, fire alarm, automatic doors and the like that are all in place to ensure occupants can safely egress the building during a disaster.
Installing SPD’s to protect emergency switchboards and panelboards will support the general scope of the NEC® which is to protect persons and property from the hazards arising from using electricity.
Below is a preview of the NEC®. See the actual NEC® text at NFPA.ORG for the complete code section. Once there, click on the “free access” tab and select the applicable year of NFPA 70 (National Electrical code).
