Code Change Summary: Revised code language. The 2020 NEC® will now specify a zone where receptacles are not permitted to be installed around the bathtub or shower.
The previous code language stated that receptacles shall not be installed within or directly over a bathtub or shower stall. The language was subjective and vague. What is considered “directly over”?
The revised code language was intended to align with the installation requirements and dimensions for luminaires near bathtubs and shower stalls from Section 410.10(D). Now, receptacles shall be installed no closer 3 feet horizontally from, and 8 feet vertically from the top of the bathtub rim or shower stall threshold.
