Code Change Summary: New code section on hazardous location rated metal clad type MC-HL cable.

New Section 330.130 is in Part III of Article 330 which covers the construction specifications of an MC cable. Since Section 330.6 requires all MC cables to be listed by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) like UL, this new section really is more for the manufacturer rather than the electrician.

The new section provides construction requirements for MC cables listed for use in Hazardous Locations (MC-HL).

Verifying that the MC cable is listed and identified for hazardous locations is a good practice before installing the cable in a hazardous location. Notice that the new code language says, “where required to be marked MC-HL”. Hazardous locations permitting the use of MC-HL are found in the applicable NEC® Article in Chapter 5.
