Code Change Summary: Revised code language on lighting and switch requirements in attics, underfloor spaces, utility rooms, and basements.
In the 2020 NEC®. A proposal was accepted to address lighting control in attics, underfloor spaces, utility rooms, and basements that have more than one usual point of entry, where these spaces are used for storage or contain equipment requiring servicing.
The previous code language required a switch “at the usual point of entry to these spaces”. Sometimes, there may be several points of entry to these spaces and someone could easily enter from another location and be left in the dark since they were not entering from the “usual point of entry” where a wall switch was previously required.
In the 2020 NEC®, where these spaces are used for storage or contain equipment requiring servicing, a point of switch control shall be at each entry that permits access to the attic and underfloor space, utility room, or basement. The actual lighting outlet shall be installed at or near the equipment.
Below is a preview of the NEC®. See the actual NEC® text at NFPA.ORG for the complete code section. Once there, click on their link to free access to the 2020 NEC® edition of NFPA 70.
