USBC 2702.2.8 and 9 Group I-2 and I-3 Occupancies.

The VA Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation requires that a portion of the VA Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC) code changes pertaining to electrical installations be included in electrical continuing education programs.

The 2021 Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC) became effective January 18, 2024. The new code references the 2020 National Electrical Code along with the 2021 editions of the International codes (plumbing, mechanical, fuel gas).

During the 2021 VA USBC code adoption process, a change was made regarding emergency power for institutional occupancies as follows:

Change Section 2702.2.8 and 2702.2.9 of the IBC to read:

2702.2.8 Group I-2 occupancies. Emergency power shall be provided in accordance with Section 407.12 for Group I-2 occupancies licensed by the Virginia Department of Health as a hospital, nursing or hospice facility.

2702.2.9 Group I-3 occupancies. Emergency power shall be provided for doors in Group I-3 occupancies in accordance with Section 408.4.2.
