Code Change Summary: The heading of the subsection and supporting text was changed to apply to vertical surface outlets.

The previous 2011 code language in Section 314.27(A)(1) only applied to luminaires installed over a box on a wall. Well, what about a column? Is a column or a post considered a wall? If not, then this code section doesn’t apply.

Now, Section 314.27(A)(1) provides specific rules for boxes used to support luminaires installed on a vertical surface.

Below is a preview of the NEC®.  See the actual NEC® text at NFPA.ORG for the complete code section. Once there, click on the “free access” tab and select the applicable year of NFPA 70 (National Electrical code).
