NFPA 731 Section 4.2 is all about the proper use of security equipment. This section requires the security equipment to be listed for the intended purpose and that the manufacturers’ installation instructions must be followed. Also see Section 4.6.2.
Take special notice of Section 4.2.4 which prohibits installing equipment that has the appearance of a life safety device unless the device performs as one. Some people walk into a building and immediately start looking around for exit signs, emergency lighting fixtures, exit doors or special instructions on how to release a magnetic lock in order to prepare themselves in the event of a building emergency that requires evacuation. If equipment having the appearance of a life safety device is installed, then it must perform its apparent function as a life safety device.
