Code Change Summary: A new code section was added pertaining to proper markings of retrofitted signs.
Sign retrofits are very common as the older more obsolete sign components are being replaced with more efficient, energy saving technology such as light emitting diode (LED). In the 2017 NEC®, a new subsection now requires special identification for a sign that has undergone a retrofit.
These new marking requirements alert the inspector or service electrician that the sign has been field modified. The only way to ensure the retrofit was done correctly is to verify the installation with the manufacturer installation instructions. A retrofitted sign must now be marked to indicate the following:
Accidentally replacing a tubular LED lamp with a regular fluorescent lamp could blow up the fluorescent lamp if the sockets are energized.
Below is a preview of the NEC®. See the actual NEC® text at NFPA.ORG for the complete code section. Once there, click on their link to free access to the 2017 NEC® edition of NFPA 70.
