North Carolina has amended the last sentence to allow AFCI type receptacles and GFCI type receptacles that have been replaced to be installed in an accessible location.

Amend NEC® 2017, page 258:

(D) Replacements. Replacement of receptacles shall comply with 406.4(D)(1) through (D)(6), as applicable. Arc-fault circuit-interrupter type and ground-fault circuit-interrupter type receptacles shall be installed in an accessible location.

ELR commentary: In the 2017 NEC®, this section requires AFCI type receptacles and GFCI type receptacles that have been replaced to be installed in a readily accessible location.

North Carolina has amended the last sentence to allow AFCI type receptacles and GFCI type receptacles that have been replaced to be installed in an accessible location.

Special note:

This North Carolina amendment only affects receptacle replacements. The North Carolina amendment to the parent text in NEC® 210.12 allows new AFCI type receptacles to be installed in an accessible location but for new installations of GFCI type receptacles, North Carolina did not make a similar amendment. New GFCI type receptacles will still be required to be installed in “readily accessible” locations in compliance with NEC® 210.8.
