Amend NEC® 2017, page 59:

(3) Outdoors

Exception No. 1 to (3): Receptacles that are not readily accessible and are supplied by a branch circuit dedicated to electric snow-melting, deicing, or pipeline and vessel heating equipment shall be permitted to be installed in accordance with 426.28 or 427.22, as applicable.

Exception No. 2 to (3): A single outlet receptacle supplied by a dedicated branch circuit that is located and identified for specific use by a sewage lift pump.

ELR commentary: This applies only to dwelling units in North Carolina. This has been a North Carolina amendment for many years and basically allows a single receptacle supplied from a dedicated branch circuit to be without GFCI protection as long as it serves a sewage lift pump. The intent is to avoid a nuisance trip of the GFCI mechanism which could create a sewage backup in the plumbing system.
