Code Change Summary: A new code section requires appliance listing.

In the 2014 NEC®, there was nothing specifically requiring appliances to be listed by any kind of nationally recognized testing laboratory (NRTL). Even though appliances were not required to be listed, most appliances are listed, similar to many other things in the NEC® such as circuit breakers in Article 240.

Some states have specific requirements that anything using electricity must be listed even if the NEC® does not mention it.

In the 2017 NEC®, a new section now requires all appliances operating at 50 volts or more to be listed. Requiring listing ensures that appliances are evaluated to certain safety standards related to the specific appliance. As stated by the committee responsible for voting on the code change proposal, “all appliances should be listed and labeled to classify the equipment and to ensure application of proper installation requirements”.

Below is a preview of the NEC®. See the actual NEC® text at NFPA.ORG for the complete code section. Once there, click on their link to free access to the 2017 NEC® edition of NFPA 70.
