Typical well drilling rigs require sufficient room to extend and operate.

Many cities and towns are extremely populated and fresh water supply is provided by the local water utility company. For other areas not within the boundaries of public utilities coverage, it is more common to have a well drilling service come out and drill a well on site.

A well drilling rig needs sufficient space to operate. Once extended, these rigs are generally very tall. As long as there are no obstacles or overhead power lines to get tangled up in, a well drilling rig can operate safely.

North Dakota has specific provisions regarding the location of overhead conductors installed near well sites. Refer to the Laws, Rules and Wiring Standards of North Dakota for additional information.
