Code Change Summary: A new code section was added to address “Separable Attachment Fittings”.

New and innovative products emerging in the electrical industry sometimes warrant the need for a code change. Section 314.27(E) is new in the 2017 NEC® and creates the code language needed to allow a new type of receptacle to be installed inside boxes.

In the 2017 NEC®, the definition of a “receptacle” was revised in Article 100:

Receptacle. A contact device installed at the outlet for the connection of an attachment plug, or for the direct connection of electrical utilization equipment designed to mate with the corresponding contact device.

The new definition aligns with the typical receptacles used in most electrical systems as well as a new product that can be used to make the installation of ceiling fans and luminaires much easier (see image).

Now, Outlet boxes are permitted to support listed locking support and mounting receptacles used in combination with compatible attachment fittings. The combination must be identified for the support of equipment within the weight and orientation limits of the product listing. Where the supporting receptacle is installed within a box, it must be included in the fill calculation mentioned in 314.16(B)(4) which covers device or equipment fill.

The receptacle in the image is designed to be installed inside a box. It allows the installer to wire in one half of the receptacle and attach the other compatible attachment fitting to a luminaire or ceiling fan. The luminaire or fan can then simply be lifted and plugged into place.

See 422.18 for similar code language related to ceiling fans.
