Code Change Summary: The way certain code Articles can modify or amend others has been modified.

The NEC® has 9 chapters and has always been clear that the first four chapters apply generally to all electrical installations and Chapters 5, 6, and 7 can modify the rules in Chapters 1 through 4. There are instances where rules in Chapters 5, 6 or 7 can also supplement or modify each other rather than just Chapters 1 through 4 but until now, that occurrence has never actually been mentioned in Figure 90.3 which shows how the NEC® is arranged.

In the 2017 NEC®, the text in section 90.3 as well as Figure 90.3 have been changed to show that Chapters 1 through 4 apply generally, but now, Chapters 5, 6, and 7 can supplement or modify the rules in Chapters 1 through 7.

Here’s an example for wiring methods in Chapter 5, Article 518 (Assembly Occupancies), where other code articles modify the rules in Article 518:

Section 518.3(A) states that electrical installations in hazardous locations of an assembly occupancy must comply with Article 500.

Section 518.3(B) states that temporary wiring in an assembly occupancy must comply with Article 590 except that the GFCI requirements in 590.6 shall not apply.

Below is a preview of Article 90. See the actual NEC® text at NFPA.ORG for the complete code section. Once there, click on their link to free access to the 2017 NEC® edition of NFPA 70.
