Code Change Summary: A new definition of “Innerduct” was added in Article 800.
In section 800.2 of the 2014 NEC®, the definition of a “communications raceway” has been deleted and a new definition of “Innerduct” takes its place.
The old definition failed to include CATV and fiber optic cables which are also commonly installed in communications raceways.
The term “Innerduct” is used for a nonmetallic raceway or conduit placed within a larger raceway. This code change goes hand in hand with new code section 800.12 which permits listed plenum communications raceway, listed riser communications raceway, and listed general-purpose communications raceway selected in accordance with the provisions of Table 800.154(b) to be installed as innerduct in any type of listed raceway permitted in Chapter 3.
Below is a preview of the NEC®. See the actual NEC® text at NFPA.ORG for the complete code section. Once there, click on the “free access” tab and select the applicable year of NFPA 70 (National Electrical code).
