Multiple extension rings are permitted in NEC 314.22.
Code Change Summary: Revised language in 314.22 clarifies that multiple extension rings are permitted to be installed on boxes.
SME commentary: In the 2026 NEC®, Section 314.22 was revised to clarify that multiple surface extension rings may be used on boxes. The phrase “one or more extension rings” was added to the section to make it unmistakably clear that the NEC® allows more than a single extension ring to be installed where needed to extend the box depth.
This clarification originated from public input and public comments during both the First and Second Draft stages of the 2026 NEC® development cycle. The submitter proposed revising the text to limit installations to a single extension ring, arguing that the intent of the existing code language was singular since it mentioned “securing AN extension ring over the box”. The proposal sought to revise the section to read: “Surface extensions shall be made by mounting and mechanically securing a single extension ring over the box.”
During the First Draft meeting, the code panel reviewed the proposal and rejected it, citing insufficient technical justification for restricting the installation to only one ring. The panel noted that while multiple extension rings may not always appear aesthetically desirable, their use does not present a safety hazard when properly installed in accordance with product listing and manufacturer instructions.
At the Second Draft stage, the submitter again requested a similar change, but the panel reaffirmed its earlier position. In fact, the panel went a step further by adding the words “one or more” to the final language, specifically to eliminate any ambiguity and to make clear that multiple extension rings are acceptable. The panel stated that more than one extension ring may be needed in certain applications. The 2026 revised language in 314.22 now states: Surface extensions shall be made by mounting and mechanically securing one or more extension rings over the box.
UL product category QCIT supports this position by addressing extension rings as products suitable for extending securely mounted flush or surface boxes and explicitly stating that “one or more extensions may be used.” This confirms that such installations are recognized and considered during product testing and evaluation.
This 2026 revision reinforces existing safe installation practices and provides clarity for installers and inspectors who frequently encounter field conditions requiring the use of multiple extension rings. By clarifying permissive intent rather than imposing unnecessary limitation, the NEC® continues to focus on safety through performance-based requirements rather than arbitrary restriction.
