SME commentary: In the 2026 NEC^®, a new Section 314.2 was added to identify all equipment within Article 314 that requires product certification (Listing). The words “listed” and “listing” continue to appear throughout the article, but most prior references were associated with installation or application requirements rather than explicitly identifying which products must be listed. This new section consolidates and clarifies those requirements, improving usability and consistency with the NEC^® Style Manual.

Section 314.2 organizes the listing requirements into eight specific product categories, each representing types of equipment that must be listed when installed in accordance with Article 314. Under the new code language, the following shall be listed:

• Box extenders.
• Drain fittings larger than ¼ inch.
• Floor boxes and floor box covers.
• Where located in the floor of show windows or other display applications and determined by the authority having jurisdiction not to be exposed to physical damage, moisture, or dirt, boxes shall be permitted to be other than those listed for floor applications. Receptacles and covers shall be listed as an assembly for such applications.
• Outlet boxes used to provide mechanical support for ceiling fans shall be listed for fan support.
• Boxes and conduit bodies with reduced dimensions from usual code requirements shall be listed and marked with the allowable fill.
• Underground boxes and handhole enclosures that are permitted to be covered by gravel, light aggregate, or noncohesive granulated soil shall be listed.
• Reduced-wall-thickness boxes and conduit bodies.
• Covers made from different materials than boxes or conduit bodies.
• Metal covers of thinner construction than boxes or conduit bodies on which they are installed must be listed.

By placing these requirements in one location, users can now easily determine which equipment governed by Article 314 must be listed products.

Before the 2026 revision, the article contained more than thirty individual references to listed products scattered throughout various subsections. The NEC^® Style Manual instructs each article to consolidate such requirements into its .2 section, ensuring clear and centralized identification of all products requiring listing. The Code-Making Panel (CMP-8) reviewed every reference to determine which items fell within the purview of Article 314 and which were better addressed in other articles or under the authority of other code-making panels.
