Code Change Summary: New definition of a “metering center” added to Article 100.

SME commentary: The 2026 NEC® now includes the following definition for the term “metering center” in Article 100: Metering Centers (Meter Center). Panelboards in enclosures also containing one or more meter sockets.

This change supports the language in Section 230.71(B)(4), first added during the 2020 NEC® cycle, where it was referenced but not defined. The absence of a formal definition caused confusion in the field, particularly when inspectors and installers encountered varying interpretations.

This update was driven by a public input submitted by Underwriters Laboratories (UL). The intent was to align NEC® terminology with UL 67, the Standard for Panelboards, where the term “metering center” is already clearly defined and widely recognized. According to UL 67, a metering center refers to a panelboard or enclosed panelboard that includes one or more meter sockets, a common configuration in multi-occupancy buildings and service entrance applications.

The public input also included a clarification that “meter center,” although not used in the NEC®, is synonymous with “metering center.” In accordance with Section 2.1.2.8 of the NEC® Style Manual, alternate terms that are commonly used but not adopted in the NEC® can still be referenced within the definition to assist code users in understanding the terminology.

This new definition not only clears up ambiguity from previous code cycles but also enhances code usability by ensuring consistent interpretation across jurisdictions and project designs. Installers and inspectors can now reference a formal NEC® definition that matches what’s found in UL Standards and real-world applications.
