Code Change Summary: New definitions appear in Article 625 related to electric vehicle charging.

According to the NEC® style manual, definitions that appear in Article 100 are terms used in more than one code article in the NEC®. Other definitions that are only used in one specific code article are found at the beginning of that article. There are always unique circumstances where one slips by such as the term “transformer” (defined in 450.2 but used all throughout the NEC).

In the 2014 NEC®, Article 625, has a few new definitions:

625.2 Definitions

Cable Management System (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment). An apparatus designed to control and organize unused lengths of output cable to the electric vehicle.

Output Cable to the Electric Vehicle. An assembly consisting of a length of flexible EV cable and an electric vehicle connector (supplying power to the electric vehicle).

Power-Supply Cord. An assembly consisting of an attachment plug and length of flexible cord that connects the electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) to a receptacle.
