Code Change Summary: Previous requirements on the mechanical execution of work for cables were removed from Article 725.
Section 725.24 in previous editions of the NEC® required the installation of Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 circuits and cables to be done in a neat and workmanlike manner including securing, supporting and overall mechanical execution of work.
In the 2023 NEC®, Section 725.24 was revised and now only applies to Class 2 and Class 3 equipment. Previous language from 725.24 on the mechanical execution of work for the cables is now located in 722.24. The revised language requires Class 2 and Class 3 equipment to be installed in a neat and workmanlike manner and also comply with 300.4 and 300.11.
Section 300.4 provides protection requirements for conductors, raceways, and cables subject to physical damage but remains silent on “equipment”. Equipment is defined in Article 100 as a general term, including fittings, devices, appliances, luminaires, apparatus, machinery, and the like used as a part of, or in connection with, an electrical installation.
Section 300.11 pertains to wiring methods and materials but not “equipment”.
It is likely that the 2023 language in revised Section 725.24 requiring “equipment” comply with 300.4 and 300.11 will be removed in the 2026 NEC®.
