Code Change Summary: Revised code language provides clarity to the rules on receptacles near bathtubs and showers.
In the 2017 NEC®, code language in Section 406.9(C) simply stated that receptacles were not to be installed within or directly over a bathtub or shower stall. The 2017 language was subjective and vague. What was considered “directly over”?
The 2020 NEC® saw a revision in Section 406.9(C) which specified a zone where receptacles were not permitted to be installed around the bathtub or shower.
This revised language was intended to align with the installation requirements and dimensions for luminaires near bathtubs and shower stalls from Section 410.10(D). The 2020 code change to Section 406.9(C) made it clear that receptacles must not be installed closer than 3 feet horizontally from, and 8 feet vertically from the top of the bathtub rim or shower stall threshold. Unfortunately, this revised language made no mention of the area below the bathtub rim.
In the 2023 NEC®, Section 406.9(C) was modified to include the area inside of the tub and also the space outside of the tub, below the designated zone.
Now, receptacles are not permitted to be installed inside of the tub or shower or within 3 feet horizontally from the outside edge of the bathtub or shower stall, including the space outside the bathtub or shower stall space below the zone unless one of the exceptions applies (see image).
