Code Change Summary: Article 311 was relocated and revised into new Article 315 covering Medium Voltage (MV) Installations.
In the 2023 NEC®, new Article 315 was created with the contents from previous Article 311 and expanded with additional language covering terminations, MV cable joints, and MV cable connectors to provide for complete MV system installation.
Section 315.6 covers product listing and requires type MV cable joints, MV cable terminations, and connectors, to be listed with an effective date of January 1, 2026. Previously, only the MV cables required listing. The future effective date allows the electrical industry some time to exhaust inventory of unlisted cable joints, terminals, and connectors and to comply with the new listing requirement.
New Section 315.17 provides marking requirements for MV cable joints and terminations.
Section 315.30 ensures that the qualified persons who make up MV joints and terminations have documented training and experience in the installation of MV cable joints and terminations.
During the 2023 NEC® development process the NEC® saw several new or renumbered articles related to installations over 1000 volts ending in the digit “5” as a move to make medium voltage installation requirements easier to find:
