Code Change Summary: The scope of Article 100 has been revised.
The global change in the 2023 NEC® to locate all NEC® definitions to Article 100 created the need to modify the scope of the Article.
The previous language stating that “definitions are also found in XXX.2 sections of other articles”, has been deleted and the second paragraph that speaks of the subdivided parts of Article 100 is gone.
A new last sentence was added to the scope of Article 100 that states “an article number in parentheses following the definition indicates that the definition only applies to that article”.
An example of this is the term “Adapter” in Article 100 as seen below. This term was previously defined in NEC® Section 520.2 since it was only used in Article 520. Now that it has been relocated to Article 100, having the applicable code article shown in parentheses after the definition tells the code user that this definition is only applicable to Article 520.
Adapter. A device used to adapt a circuit from one configuration of an attachment plug or receptacle to another configuration with the same current rating. (520) (CMP 15)
