A new code section now requires special protection for any exposed combustible surface under a ceiling fan canopy. The new code section makes it clear that if an exposed combustible surface exists between the edge of a fan canopy and the outlet box, then the surface must be protected with noncombustible material.

2014 Code Language:
422.21 Covering of Combustible Material at Outlet Boxes. Any combustible ceiling finish exposed between the edge of a ceiling-suspended (paddle) fan canopy or pan and an outlet box shall be covered with noncombustible material.
