In Oregon, an average illumination level of 10 foot candles is required for work space service equipment, switchgear switchboards, switchgear, panelboards, or motor control centers installed indoors.

The NEC® generally does not provide rules on the brightness of emergency illumination in Article 700. Illumination levels are a requirement of the Life Safety Code or the Building Code.

In Oregon, OESC Section 110.26(D) states the following:

Illumination of 10 foot candles average, measured at the floor, shall be provided for all working spaces about service equipment, switchgear switchboards, switchgear, panelboards, or motor control centers installed indoors. Control by automatic means only shall not be permitted to control all illumination within the working spaces. Additional lighting outlets shall not be required where the work space is illuminated by an adjacent light source or as permitted by 210.70(A)(1), Exception No. 1, for switched receptacles”.

Oregon amendments to the 2023 NEC® are located in “Table 1-E” of the Oregon Electrical Specialty Code (OESC) which can be seen using the following link or the OESC PDF file located near the bottom of the screen: 2023 OESC
