Code Change Summary: New code section addresses periodic pool inspections by the inspection Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).

Aging swimming pool equipment can create a safety hazard if not properly maintained. After a new swimming pool has been inspected and approved by the AHJ, it is up to the homeowner or future homeowners to maintain it for safety. After the initial inspection, its anyone’s guess if the pool will need a replacement pool pump over time or if the equipotential bonding will maintain its original integrity or be disconnected when digging in the yard for landscape improvements. For years, the AHJ has had no code language to stand on if they wanted to have another look at an older swimming pool for a safety check.

In the 2020 NEC®, new language has been added to address this. During the first draft stage of the 2020 NEC®, this new language actually said the following: The authority having jurisdiction shall be permitted to require inspection of the complete system for permanently installed equipment periodically after installation to ensure systems are maintained in proper operating condition.

During the 2nd draft process, it was argued that the new code language was vague and unenforceable which resulted in the following revision: The authority having jurisdiction shall be permitted to require inspection of the complete system for permanently installed equipment periodically after installation to ensure systems are maintained in proper operating condition periodic inspection and testing.
