Examples of portals include doors, gates (personnel and vehicular), lift gates, sliders, barriers, turnstiles (mechanical and optical), mantraps, and sally ports.

Turnstiles are commonly used at the entry to buildings, malls and subway systems.

Sally ports are often used at correctional facilities to ensure passage only for authorized personnel.
