Code Change Summary: Article 235 is new.

Article 235 is new in the 2023 NEC® and covers branch circuits, feeders, and services over 1000 volts ac, 1500 volts dc, nominal.

Part I of Article 235 is general and provides a scope of the new Article.

Part II applies to branch circuits over 1000 volts ac, 1500 volts dc and contains the language previously located in Article 210 pertaining to these voltages.

Part III applies to feeders over 1000 volts ac, 1500 volts dc and contains the language previously located in Article 215 pertaining to these voltages.

Part IV applies to outside branch circuits and feeders over 1000 volts ac, 1500 volts dc and contains the language previously located in Article 225 pertaining to these voltages.

Part V applies to services over 1000 volts ac, 1500 volts dc and contains the language previously located in Part VIII of Article 230.

During the 2023 development process, some felt that creating this new article was an overreach by the code panel since the new article was the result of a task group rather than Public Inputs (code change proposals from the public). It was expressed that this new article resulted in a solution for a problem that never existed. There are still many existing code sections in other articles in the NEC® where code language applying to “over 1000 volts ac, 1500 volts dc” remains under the current NEC® structure because the Code Panels voted against moving them out of their articles.

It is likely that this new article will see many revisions or possibly be deleted in future code cycles with the language being returned to where it was prior to the creation of the new article.

Currently the new article has requirements that apply to loads (over 1000 volts ac, 1500 volts dc) that are unlikely to be seen in the near future such as:
